More than 6 months ago at the general Relief Society meeting Elder Uchtdorf gave that fabulous talk entitled "Happiness, Your Heritage" with a section about the work of creation, in which he encouraged and invited everyone to create something. This excited me as I thought of the talents I should unbury and new things I should learn.
One invitation stuck out in particular, he said, "identify a space and beautify it". Immediately the front of our little house popped into my head and I thought, "shoo weee, space identified!" - I've been plotting my plan of attack for months and now the sun is out and planting is fair game so without further ado behold my little bit of beautification.
Before...
blah
notice that you can't see where the endless grass and weeds become the "flower bed"

During...
After...
Now side by side for my own satisfaction - ahhhhh - a sigh of fulfillment
I feel like I need to mention that this project was completed for less than $100 (excluding the child adorning the lawn - who was much more than that).
(Special thanks to the Millers for the digging fork that made this all possible and to my mama for letting me practice on her yard and getting me hooked on sweet potato vine)
And to end the inspiration where it began I turn again to Elder Uchtdorf
"As you take the normal opportunities of your daily life and create something of beauty and helpfulness, you improve not only the world around you but also the world within you."

Yeah for you! I've been working on my front yard flower beds this week too. It's really gratifying to see such a change, isn't it? Now I need to talk Dennis into buying me some mulch...
I think that looks so good! Nice job Christine! I loved that talk too! I love how he said that people make bread that are used as doorstops... haha I want to try and learn to cook something out of my scope of comfort.... someday soon!
Way to take that inspirations and run with it! Your yard looks truly beautiful. It's obvious that lots of love and dedication went into it! :)
well done Christine. I spent the last 2 days stripping, sealing, and finishing my kitchen floor and it is not nearly as inspiring as your little flower bed but it is quite satisfying to just improve something, isn't it?
I can't wait to come and visit and see your amazing flower garden in person!!! Way to go Christine! I love it!!
Wow your flower beds are BEAUTIFUL!!! the best feeling ever is....that you did it, and will enjoy them each and every time you use your front door.
I love your new yard! I did my flower beds last year, but this year Devin got us a new little tree to finish them off. I will have some pictures. I don't know what it is about gardening, but I think it is so relaxing and fulfilling.
Do you want to come and practice a little more on my garden plot???? Isn't that just like you my dear daughter to thank me for giving you the opportunity to learn your wonderful skillls? I am so pleased - you will enjoy that little bit of paradise so much
I am so impressed! I want space to grow things. I have decided that I wanted a pea plant, so I can go outside and pick peas and just eat them. I also want a Meyer Lemon tree. As of today, it looks like there is a good chance that we could end up in New York this fall - make room for my small meyer lemon tree in our studio apartment!
